IWR June Newsletter: Our 100th Report! More to Come.
CHENIN BLANC: SOUTH AFRICA’S VINOUS TREASURE Our report (#100!!!) reviews 160 wines from 72 producers. Thanks to the Chenin Blanc Association, Wines of South Africa, the Old Vine Project, and the many producers and winemakers that made this report possible.
Chenin Blanc wine reflects its terroir [see our article on the Mullineux soil-specific Chenin Blancs], so there are many styles ranging from inexpensive, easy to drink to richly flavored, well-oaked bottlings. The Chenin Blancs that receive the attention of sommeliers are those made from dry farmed, old bush vines that carry the label Certified Heritage Vineyard from the Old Vine Project. Many of the wines reviewed in our new report are made from old vines. Also, watch our YouTube interview with the Queen of Old Vines, Rosa Kruger.
In addition to this in-depth report, we have published numerous articles on Chenin Blanc over the past few months reviewing the wines of producers like Eben Sadie, Duncan Savage, Andrea and Chris Mullineux, Johan Reyneke, and Roodekrantz–click here for the Roodekrantz article.
Our next report will be on the wines of Chianti Classico with emphasis on the new UGA classification. We recently published an article on Sofia Ruhne and her Terreno wines.
We’re also working on a report on the Cool Climate Wines of the Santa Cruz Mountains to be released this autumn. Read our article on Pinot Noir pioneer David Bruce.
For wine lovers looking for fun-to-read books on wine over the summer, we recommend Italy in a Wine Glass by Marc Millon. Our review is here.
