2021 Kirkland Signature Saint-Julien Bordeaux
This popular Kirkland Bordeaux is back. Always a good sign since we have only have seen two vintages so far. It’s nice to see Costco committed to these high quality, highly desirable wine regions with the Kirkland label.
More good news, the price actually keeps coming down a little bit each year. It’s not much, but we’ll take it going that direction instead of the other way.
This bottle was $18.69 with the 2019 vintage; then $17.99 for the 2020 vintage, and now $17.49 for the latest 2021 vintage.
Bordeaux fans will instantly know this region, as it is one of the premier areas in the left bank of Bordeaux. The blend this year is the exact same as the prior two vintages: 76% Merlot, and 24% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Yes, more of a right bank blend, but you see this with 2nd and 3rd wines from producers on the left bank, the grapes often from younger vines on the property.
Tasting notes are a little different compared to the prior two. We enjoyed it very much, but just hair less than the other bottles.
Signature Bordeaux on the nose; a nice stinky barnyard; a little light on flavor but pleasant all around; dark fruit, plum, blackberry, black cherry; earthy with nice acidity; strong finish.
We rated the 2019 91 points, the 2020 92 points, but this time we’re bringing it back down to 90 which we feel is where this one belongs.
It has all the right elements, and is a fantastic buy. It just lacks a bit of the depth and character we enjoyed so much in the prior vintage.
